Overview
Most ovarian cysts are functional, resolve on their own, and cause few symptoms. Some cause pain, and torsion is an emergency.
Symptoms to watch for
- Pelvic pain or pressure, often one-sided
- Pain with intercourse
- Bloating
- Menstrual irregularity
How it's diagnosed
Transvaginal ultrasound. CA-125 in postmenopausal or concerning cases.
Treatment
Watchful waiting for functional cysts. Pain control. Surgery for large, complex, or torsed cysts.
