Overview
MS is an autoimmune demyelinating disease of the central nervous system. Symptoms depend on where lesions form and typically come in relapsing episodes.
Symptoms to watch for
- Numbness or tingling in a limb
- Vision loss in one eye (optic neuritis)
- Weakness
- Balance problems
- Bladder urgency
- Fatigue disproportionate to activity
- Heat sensitivity
How it's diagnosed
MRI brain and spine, lumbar puncture, evoked potentials. Neurology referral required.
Treatment
Disease-modifying therapies (interferons, ocrelizumab, natalizumab, ofatumumab, etc.). Steroids for acute relapses.
