MS (multiple sclerosis) symptoms

Overview

MS is an autoimmune demyelinating disease of the central nervous system. Symptoms depend on where lesions form and typically come in relapsing episodes.

Symptoms to watch for

  • Numbness or tingling in a limb
  • Vision loss in one eye (optic neuritis)
  • Weakness
  • Balance problems
  • Bladder urgency
  • Fatigue disproportionate to activity
  • Heat sensitivity

How it's diagnosed

MRI brain and spine, lumbar puncture, evoked potentials. Neurology referral required.

Treatment

Disease-modifying therapies (interferons, ocrelizumab, natalizumab, ofatumumab, etc.). Steroids for acute relapses.
