Iron deficiency is the most common nutrient deficiency worldwide. Symptoms are often attributed to just being tired. Ferritin is the best screen.

Symptoms to watch for

  • Fatigue disproportionate to activity
  • Shortness of breath with exertion
  • Pale skin
  • Cold hands and feet
  • Restless legs
  • Pica (ice cravings)
  • Hair loss
  • Brittle nails

How it's diagnosed

Ferritin (best marker), CBC, iron panel. Investigate cause in men and postmenopausal women (GI workup).

Treatment

Oral ferrous sulfate/gluconate every other day (better absorbed than daily). IV iron for intolerance, malabsorption, or heavy menstrual loss.
