Celiac / gluten intolerance symptoms

Overview

Celiac is an autoimmune reaction to gluten damaging the small intestine. Non-celiac gluten sensitivity has similar symptoms without the immune damage. Testing must happen before going gluten-free.

Symptoms to watch for

  • Diarrhea, bloating, gas
  • Weight loss (or unexplained weight gain in some)
  • Iron, B12, or vitamin D deficiency
  • Fatigue
  • Brain fog
  • Dermatitis herpetiformis (itchy blistering rash)

How it's diagnosed

Tissue transglutaminase (tTG-IgA) with total IgA, while still eating gluten. Endoscopic biopsy confirms.

Treatment

Strict lifelong gluten-free diet.
