Naltrexone consultation for alcohol use

An alcohol-use visit can discuss goals, drinking patterns and whether naltrexone is appropriate. The clinician reviews medical history, liver testing and any opioid use before considering medication. You can seek help without having a diagnosis already, and your goals can include reducing drinking as well as stopping.

Before your visit

Bring a medication list, recent lab results, and an honest account of drinking and withdrawal symptoms. Mention any opioid pain medicine or opioid-use treatment.

What happens next

The existing service does not manage acute alcohol withdrawal. Seizures, hallucinations or severe withdrawal need emergency care. Follow-up and counseling coordination may be part of the plan.
