Shingles symptoms

Overview

Shingles is reactivation of varicella-zoster virus, causing a painful rash in a single dermatomal band. Antivirals are most effective within 72 hours of rash onset.

Symptoms to watch for

• Burning, tingling, or pain in a strip on one side of the body
• Rash 1–3 days later — grouped blisters on red base
• Rash respects the midline
• Fever, malaise
• Headache

Treatment

Valacyclovir 1 g three times daily for 7 days, ideally within 72 hours. Gabapentin or amitriptyline for postherpetic neuralgia. Shingrix vaccine for prevention (adults 50+).
