Pink eye symptoms

Overview

Pink eye is inflammation of the conjunctiva. Viral is most common (watery, spreads easily), bacterial produces thick pus (needs drops), allergic itches and affects both eyes.

Symptoms to watch for

  • Redness in the white of the eye
  • Watery or thick discharge
  • Gritty sensation
  • Eyelids stuck together in the morning
  • Itching (allergic type)

What else could this be?

  • Iritis — deep pain, photophobia
  • Corneal ulcer — needs urgent ophthalmology
  • Dry eye syndrome

How it's diagnosed

Clinical — appearance and history distinguish types.

Treatment

Viral: cool compresses, artificial tears, resolves in 1–2 weeks. Bacterial: erythromycin ointment or polymyxin/trimethoprim drops. Allergic: antihistamine drops (olopatadine).
