Overview
Pyelonephritis is a bacterial infection of the kidney, usually ascending from a bladder infection. It needs different antibiotics, longer courses, and sometimes hospitalization.
Symptoms to watch for
- Fever and chills
- Flank or back pain (one side)
- Nausea and vomiting
- UTI symptoms (burning, frequency)
- Fatigue

- Kidney stone
- Ovarian pathology
How it's diagnosed
Urine culture, CBC. CT scan if stone suspected.
Treatment
Ciprofloxacin or ceftriaxone. Hospitalization for severe cases, pregnancy, or inability to tolerate oral meds.
