Intermittent fasting

Overview

Intermittent fasting is an eating pattern (16:8, alternate-day, 5:2) not a diet. Weight loss and metabolic benefits are comparable to calorie restriction — not superior — but easier for some.

Treatment

Common protocols: 16:8 (eat within 8-hour window), 5:2 (2 low-cal days/week), one meal a day (not recommended long-term). Contraindicated in eating disorders, pregnancy, some diabetes regimens, and history of gallstones.
