How to stop hiccups

Overview

Most hiccups are self-limited. Persistent hiccups (>48 hours) or intractable (>1 month) can signal reflux, phrenic nerve irritation, or CNS causes.

Treatment

Techniques: hold breath while swallowing water 10 times, breathe into paper bag, cold water gargle, sugar under the tongue, Valsalva maneuver. Persistent: baclofen, gabapentin, chlorpromazine, or investigate cause.
