How to break a fever

Overview

Fever is a physiologic response, not a disease. Treating for comfort is fine; treating just to normalize the number doesn't help you recover faster.

Treatment

Alternate ibuprofen 400 mg and acetaminophen 650 mg every 3 hours. Hydrate. Cool room. Light layers. Lukewarm sponging if very high. Avoid ice baths (can cause shivering, paradoxically raising temperature).

When to book a visit

Book if fever has lasted more than 3–4 days or you're concerned about the cause.
