When to go to the ER vs urgent care

Overview

The right level of care saves time and money. ER for life/limb threats. Urgent care for things needing hands-on evaluation same day. Telehealth for everything that can be safely handled remotely.

Treatment

ER: chest pain with sweating, stroke symptoms, severe shortness of breath, head injury with confusion, uncontrolled bleeding, suicidal intent with plan, severe abdominal pain, high fever with rigid neck, testicular pain, severe allergic reactions. Urgent care: sprains, lacerations needing stitches, mild-moderate breathing symptoms, in-person exam needs. Telehealth: UTIs, refills, skin concerns, mental health, minor infections, follow-ups, chronic disease management.
