Appendicitis symptoms

Overview

Appendicitis is a surgical emergency. Classic presentation: pain starts around the belly button, then migrates to the right lower quadrant over hours.

Symptoms to watch for

  • Pain starting periumbilical, then RLQ
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea and vomiting after pain begins
  • Low-grade fever
  • Pain with movement

How it's diagnosed

Clinical + labs (WBC) + CT scan or ultrasound.

Treatment

Appendectomy. Some uncomplicated cases treated with antibiotics.
