Overview
Appendicitis is a surgical emergency. Classic presentation: pain starts around the belly button, then migrates to the right lower quadrant over hours.
Symptoms to watch for
- Pain starting periumbilical, then RLQ
- Loss of appetite
- Nausea and vomiting after pain begins
- Low-grade fever
- Pain with movement
How it's diagnosed
Clinical + labs (WBC) + CT scan or ultrasound.
Treatment
Appendectomy. Some uncomplicated cases treated with antibiotics.
