IBS

Also known as: irritable bowel

Overview

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a functional GI disorder causing abdominal pain tied to bowel habits — diarrhea-predominant (IBS-D), constipation-predominant (IBS-C), or mixed. It's diagnosed clinically using Rome IV criteria once red flags (bleeding, weight loss, anemia, family history of IBD or colon cancer) are ruled out. Clindle starts with diet (low-FODMAP trial, soluble fiber), stress strategies, and targeted medications — antispasmodics like dicyclomine, low-dose tricyclics, rifaximin for SIBO, linaclotide or lubiprostone for constipation, eluxadoline or loperamide for diarrhea. We refer to GI for atypical features or colonoscopy.
