Overview
Hemorrhoids are swollen veins around the anus/rectum. Internal cause bleeding; external can cause pain from thrombosis.
Symptoms to watch for
- Bright red blood on toilet paper or in the bowl
- Anal itching
- Painful lump at the anus (thrombosed external)
- Prolapse of tissue

Treatment
Fiber (25–35 g/day), stool softeners, warm sitz baths, topical hydrocortisone or lidocaine. Procedures for refractory cases: banding, sclerotherapy, hemorrhoidectomy.
