Hemorrhoid symptoms

Overview

Hemorrhoids are swollen veins around the anus/rectum. Internal cause bleeding; external can cause pain from thrombosis.

Symptoms to watch for

  • Bright red blood on toilet paper or in the bowl
  • Anal itching
  • Painful lump at the anus (thrombosed external)
  • Prolapse of tissue

  • Anal fissure
  • Colon polyp or cancer
  • IBD

Treatment

Fiber (25–35 g/day), stool softeners, warm sitz baths, topical hydrocortisone or lidocaine. Procedures for refractory cases: banding, sclerotherapy, hemorrhoidectomy.
