Overview
Metabolic-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD, formerly NAFLD) affects 25%+ of adults and is often silent. Progression to inflammation (MASH) and fibrosis is what to prevent.
Symptoms to watch for
- Usually none
- Sometimes mild right-upper-quadrant discomfort
- Fatigue
How it's diagnosed
Elevated ALT/AST on labs, ultrasound showing steatosis, FibroScan or MR elastography for fibrosis. Rule out other causes (viral hepatitis, alcohol, autoimmune).
Treatment
Weight loss 7–10% reverses fatty liver. GLP-1 medications (tirzepatide, semaglutide) and resmetirom (Rezdiffra, first FDA-approved MASH drug) are options. Control diabetes and lipids.
When to book a visit
Book if your ALT/AST are elevated or imaging shows fatty liver.
