Overview
Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a clot in a deep leg vein. If it breaks off, it becomes a pulmonary embolism — potentially fatal. Recognizing DVT symptoms early prevents that.
Symptoms to watch for
- One-sided leg swelling
- Calf or thigh pain, often with walking
- Warmth and redness over affected area
- Firm, tender vein
What else could this be?
- Cellulitis
- Muscle strain
- Baker's cyst
- Venous insufficiency
How it's diagnosed
D-dimer + compression ultrasound of the leg. CT pulmonary angiogram for PE.
Treatment
Anticoagulation (apixaban, rivaroxaban) for 3–6 months.
