Blood clot / DVT symptoms

Overview

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a clot in a deep leg vein. If it breaks off, it becomes a pulmonary embolism — potentially fatal. Recognizing DVT symptoms early prevents that.

Symptoms to watch for

  • One-sided leg swelling
  • Calf or thigh pain, often with walking
  • Warmth and redness over affected area
  • Firm, tender vein

What else could this be?

  • Cellulitis
  • Muscle strain
  • Baker's cyst
  • Venous insufficiency

How it's diagnosed

D-dimer + compression ultrasound of the leg. CT pulmonary angiogram for PE.

Treatment

Anticoagulation (apixaban, rivaroxaban) for 3–6 months.

When to book a visit
